Hello BYC,
I shared with my dear husband my longtime wish to keep backyard chickens and he's building my coop Christmas present as I type. Local ordinance is 6 hens without permit, no roosters. I'm pretty much a newbie with no chickens yet. I'm looking for advice on good beginner breeds and any San Jose connections.
Thanks all!

Best beginner breeds would be Buff Orpingtons, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rocks, and Easter Eggers ( not a true breed) but produce colored eggs (hence the name). They are reliable layers and generally good tempered.

Please post on your state thread so you can communicate with others who know the climate, etc. Put state name in search box and it should come up for you. :welcome

Hello,

Here my list I always give for a good beginner flock when people ask.If you want just standard run of the mill chickens that lay alot of eggs: Rhode island Reds, buff orphingtons, leghorns, or barred rocks are generally a good starter flock. All of these breeds are generally easy to find, most feed stores that sell chicks will have them. If you want a bird that you can hold and is more pet like silkies are your best bet. The price for silkie hens may scare you, but you can generally find non show quality birds for a good price (in KY anyway.) If i was you i would get a mixture of different breeds. I started with a mixed flock when I was a kid and had things I loved and hated about each breed.

If you want to, you can also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
