Hey all,

I'm new to the site and new to raising chickens. My wife and I just bought a house on two acres. We are slowly building up our homestead and are looking for a good chicken coop. While looking for coop plans, I stumbled across this website santanvalleycoops.com. The coop I was looking to build would cost approximately $1000-1300 dollars, but I can get a similar one from these guys for roughly the same price. They don't look like your average prefabricated coop design, made out of flimsy material like the ones seen at TSC. I live in Yuma, AZ and am thinking about making a trip up to Phoenix to check them out.

If anyone has any experience in dealing with this family, please let me know. They look like a reputable company that makes solid legitimate coops.

Thanks!
Ben

Hello from Oregon!

I visited that website out of curiosity and have a few questions and opinions. First it really depends on how many chickens you plan on having in your flock. The coop/run I saw on their main page would comfortably house around 4-6 chickens, but what concerns me the most is the fact that they are using plain chicken wire on their runs. I don't know what part of the country you live in but always keep in mind there are predators out there...more than you can imagine. Chicken wire is like butter to raccoons, fox, weasels, coyotes, badgers, just to name a few, so keep that in mind whatever way you choose to go.

Wishing you well on your new chicken venture. Browse around the various threads here at BYC...there's a wealth of information here!!

We plan on having about 6 layers in this coop. I am building a small tractor coop for about 10-15 broilers. The broilers will mostly be free range on the acreage with organic feed supplement. I was looking at the chicken wire issue as well. I think I will just replace the chicken wire, or wrap better wire over it.

They would probably be willing to do customizations too, so it would be a good idea to ask them about using hardware cloth instead of the chicken wire. They might even get it cheaper than you would. The coops on their pages look pretty well made.

Hello Ben, first of all,
welcome-byc.gif
Congratulations on your new homestead. I don't have any direct experience with San Tan Valley Coops, but over the years a few BYC members from AZ have bought from them. As I recall, all of them were pleased with their coops and customer service, which seems to be a rarity among coop companies. I would highly recommend requesting hardware cloth instead of chicken wire and you can make that arrangement with the company when you order. Some of the people that bought these coops might still be active on the BYC AZ thread and it may be worth asking there too, where they are more likely to see your post. Plus, we always like to have new people join us. Good luck on your preparations for chickens!

Hello Ben,

We are a home based business located in San Tan Valley. We do often have coops that we deliver to San Diego and you are on the way there so if you do decide to purchase one of our coops we'd do it for the standard $50.00 delivery/set up. You can Google our company and find a lot of great reviews from all over, not just our website:) Let us know if you have any questions! Have a great one.

To all with the concerns for chicken wire vs. hardware cloth. You do have the option to go with either:)
