Sand and/or Grit?

Good morning, all. My coop and run sits on 4" of sand. My ISA Browns are about 3 to 4 months old and are still fed starter feed from my local feed store. However, I do throw in some romaine as well as worms dug up from the garden. Should I be serving grit or will the sand cover the need? I will be switching to layer feed next month, should I serve grit then? Thanks for the help.

I don't think the worms are a big deal since they're soft bodied but the Romaine might be. At that age, sand isn't large enough to lodge in the gizzard and passes right through. Larger adult (#3) grit is needed unless they free range where they can pick that up or they only get chicken feed.

Switch to layer when you get the first egg or continue to use your grower till it's gone and give oyster shell in a separate container.
