Sand as bedding in coop

hello all, I'm new to this whole chicken thing. Working on my coop. Trying to decide what to put on the brick floor of my coop. I was thinking of using sand as I have read good things about it. Thought it would be easy to keep clean and give the girls coolness in the Ohio summer. Come winter I was concerned it my get to hard so I thought I would put pine shavings on top of it. Any thoughts? If I do go with sand what type to I go with? Builders grade or something else?
