Hi everyone! Well I have my first 3 one week old australorps and they seem pretty happy! I haven't been feeding them any grit as I haven't been giving any treats yet besides some oats. I took them outside yesterday for the first time and they loved it! I sprinkled some oats on the ground to get them going and they were picking away! (It was about 83 degrees here in FL so I figured they'd be ok.) My question is, will our sandy soil here in FL be enough to supplement them as grit? Or should I still go and buy grit to put in their food? when they are old enough they'll be free ranging in an open bottomed run/coop.. Any thoughts?

free ranging they will get enough grit from the ground especially since you have sandy soil like we do. cooped up and giving treats i sprinkle sand on the treat or give to them in a bowl.

My chickens have access to the ground in their run and I still offer grit just in case. I put some all purpose sand in a paint tray in their coop and they seem to eat some. Have fun with your little Australorps.
