Sand Hill Preservation chicks

Has anyone ordered from them? I would like to order some dorking and delaware chicks. However they are a little costly. I do not show chickens just want eggs and some hens who will go broody. Has anyone ordered any of these breeds or other breeds from them that were broody?

I've never gotten Dorkings or Delawares from them. I did however get a big order of 17 breeds/varieties several years ago and, for the most part, I was pleased. I admire what they do. Some of the breeds were excellent. I still have 2 of the hens (an Ameraucana and a Jaerhon). Some of the others reside with friends of mine. He does a lot of tinkering with breeds so occasionally some will come that have been tinkered with but it is a great way to get very rare breeds.
They are also a little quirky. You can only reach them one day a week by phone, they aren't good about answering e-mail, you have to send a check and if they are able to complete your order, they'll cash the check and call or e-mail telling you when they'll arrive. Not bad overall.

Never had any Dorking females from them. Do have their Delaware, really like them, big birds, good layers of jumbo eggs, nice temperaments, friendly. They are somewhat broody, maybe once every year or two, but not annoyingly often, the two I let hatch eggs stuck and were good mothers.
I've mostly had light or Mediterranean breeds from them that don't set, but of the other breeds that I can think of their Ameraucana blacks and blues, and their Spangled Russion Orloffs are really broody, 2-3 times a year if you give them the chance, they are rather more broody than I like. The BLRW, Welsummers, and Marans are somewhat broody, maybe try once a year or so. They also have a mixed breed standard frizzle that are nice birds, also quite broody.

I have had both Dels and Dorkings (colored) from Sand Hill, and liked them very much - their Delawares are some of the best layers and nicest all-around birds I have owned. I am actually setting up an order for Dels and Speckled Sussex from them. Their birds are not selected as much for show standard as for production, although I have had some really nice Sussex come from there.

As said above they are not easy to contact, read their chicken ordering section carefully so that you understand how they work. I would recommend patience when you are dealing with them, in my humble opinion is is worth it.
