Sand in run

For those of you that use sand in your run, how often do you sift it clean, or do you use some other method to clean it? Also, do you replace the sand periodically?

I clean once every two weeks for my 8 birds in there now. I just use a horse manure fork under the perches. I also add more each summer. Sand is the best in my opinion makes things easy to clean and they always have dust bath and grit!

I use a dust pan on a stick and small shovel on a stick to scoop poop and put it in a 5 gallon bucket. There's no bending over. I do this several times a day. I add sand to coops and pens about every 6-7 months.

I’m in the prods of enlarging our run and we want to do sand as well. What kind of sand are using?

I use yellow sand. It comes out of a borrow pit.

Construction sand! Has all sorts of sizes mixed in it. I didn't shift that kills my elbow. I just use a horse manure fork after raking it into a pile

I was happy to see this post, this is what we want to use in our new run. Lowe’s sells .33yd bags of construction sand but I think it is too fine (more like beach sand). Would you post a close up pic with something for reference (coin, ruller, etc) so I have something to compare what we can find locally to?
