I'm reading posts that say sand is cold for the winter in a run. What should be put down over the sand in the winter? My run never gets wet or has snow on it my wire is covered with plastic with a 6" vent around the top of the run. Thanks
We have snow often, and it is only when the sand is covered with snow that my chickens avoid their run. Otherwise, regardless how cold it is, they enjoy being outside in their sand covered run. I do have a couple of straw bales and perches out there if warming their feet is an issue, but I suspect not.
I could be wrong, but I thought the concern about sand was using it for a substrate inside the coop in winter. Unlike shavings, the chickens can't snuggle down into sand for warmth at night.
