Is it okay to have sand on the floor of the coop? I know that pine shavings are most likely the best, but they are real hard for me to get so I was thinking of putting sand on the floor of the coop, around here we call it washed sand, it's the same sand that you use in a sandbox. I would have about 40 chickens in the coop, keep it vented and clean. Besides if I use sand I could change it out as often as I have to, for me sand is cheap.

Thanks:caf

I used to use sand in my coops and found it much easier to deal with than other stuff. I never had to do much else other than scoop up the poo. It was like a huge litter box lol. I ended up taking it out because my roosts were high and the chickens would slip when they jumped down. Now that I have reworked their perches, I am thinking about using sand again. Just need to use up some of the free straw we got first.
