Sanitary fountain waterer

I just got my chicken coop and I am getting supplies before I pick up my pullets. I am wondering, if I buy a fountain waterer do I need to keep it off the ground? Or should I just use a bucket with nipples?

I keep all my water fonts on top of an over turned tray of some sort. About 3 or 4 inches off the ground so the chickens don't kick too much stuff into the water. You can also hang your waterers at chest height if they make huge messes. I have never used nipples, but if yours will use them, it will definitely keep their drinking source cleaner.
