Sanitizing rabbit nest fur for reuse

I'd like to save my doe's nest-lining fur after a litter is done with it, so I can provide extra during cold weather.

However, I have concerns about the usual stuff: bacteria, fungus, mold, mites. Any potential nastiness.

So, does anyone know a good way to sanitize loose rabbit fur?

I really think you are asking for trouble if you reuse the fur. Go on the web sites that sell rabbit supplies. They might offer a rabbit fur substitute.

I'm afraid most breeder aren't finicky enough for that to be sold, thank you for the suggestion though.

Is there a reason that sanitized fur wouldn't be safe? I know some breeders reuse *without* sanitizing.

Sanitized fur would probably be safe if you figured out a way to sanitize it. I have raised rabbits but I am not an expert on them. I have come across references to artificial stuff to take the place of rabbit fur when the real thing is not available in sufficient quantities. I never looked it up because I had no need to. I have also known breeders to take and save fur from rabbits that pulled a lot of fur for their babies. This fur had not been used to raised a litter. It was just more than was needed so it was saved for future use.

I will definitely save extra during summer, especially if I can't figure out how to reliably sanitize it. I'll do more research into the artificial fur avenue in the meanwhile, thank you!
