Hello! We started our flock in May of this year with 6 bantam chicks. We started with 3 OEGBs, one White faced Black Spanish, one white frizzle Cochin, and one buff Silkie. Well the odds were against us and all but two of the OEGBs ended up boys. I would have kept the OEGB rooster if he hadn't been so incredibly loud. He was the smallest of the whole group and such a sweetheart and somehow became the Alpha. We happily found him a good home up in the mountains nearby where he has four hens to looks after. The Black spanish was beautiful but of course started crowing once Lucky was gone so then he had to go. The Silkie was mean and we were happy to see him go. Then we were down to two hens and a rooster so we went and got two more hens about the same age. These ones are Black and White bantam Brahmas. They are so gentle! Unfortunately, the rooster doesn't like them so now he is kept separate from the hens and I am on the verge of eating him.

In addition to the chickens, we have three cats and two kids.

It's pretty busy around here!

Backyard Chickens has answered a lot of questions as we've gone through the learning curve. Glad you're all here!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! Sorry to hear you had so many boys, that sure is the downside of unsexed or hatching your own. It sure does sound like you are very busy there with all your animals and children!

Good luck for the future and enjoy your time here on BYC :frow

Thanks! We were aware of the risks but having tiny chickens in a box in your living room for a few weeks is high entertainment for 5 and 6 year old kids :) It was a hassle getting the roosters dealt with but ultimately worth it!

It always worth it in the end, I've had some terrible hatches with very high numbers of boys. Some found homes and some didn't but I know they had a good home with me.

Never mind being 5/6 years old, I find them high entertainment too!

Chicks are the best TV, then they develop into adults and Chicken TV gets even more interesting. Some folks put chairs near their coop/run and just love watching. No reruns, no advertisements, no cable or satellite bills - full, living color what's not to like?
