As I was hanging out around the fire pit on Saturday night, I heard a scratching sound from the abandoned garage next door. Next thing I know, a pretty large coon came scrambling out of a gap above the doors. :/

I had suspected we had coons around, even though I live in the middle of a city, but seeing him now confirms it. I am sure he(or she) is not alone. *grumble*

Just goes to show you that even living in the city, we still have to be wary of predators. Haven't finished the run/coop yet, but now I KNOW I have to make it predator proof as possible. It was too dark to snap a picture, but he came back about 20 mintues later and went back in the garage.

Any tips for catching? I don't have a Have-a-heart trap. Should I even bother? Call Animal control? Can't go shooting guns off in the backyard either...lol.

Considering your circumstances, I'd recommend predator-proofing your coop rather than attempting capture and release, which has mixed feelings around here it would seem. Some recommend "hardware cloth" or 1/2" screen, but the quality I've seen at the stores is not sufficient to keep out a coon. It's thin and cheap. I found some OLD 1/2" wire solder grid and the gauge is double at least. No coon alive could rip through THAT stuff. I use old HDD magnets to lock the chicken's door open during the day and locked down tight at night. Just built it strong and tight and you should be fine.
