I saw red skin on the Brahma's(Carnation) thigh, I thought she had been picked on. Got out the Blue Kote, went and investigated. Got hold of her(have to get a towel over her and the EE-DAHLIA in order to do any inspection on them, they never had human contact for over 2 years). Found she wasn't being picked on. Was scratching a lot, no lice or mites (they get treated once a month, along with the coop). She has been molting and skin is irritated could see the new shafts. Just to be on the safe side I put some blue Kote on the irritated skin, give her some relief. Better to be safe than sorry. There wasn't any other irritations from all the other new feather shafts. She started making soft clucks, after getting the blue Kote on the irritation and let me sit with her on my lap getting soft gentle pets and talking to her, telling her what a good girl she is. Gave her a few treats as a reward.

The molt has begun on some birds. :thumbsup
Yep Barred Rock(Lily) aleady molted, Brahma(Carnation) has been at it for almost 7 weeks. She is a slow molter. The EE(Dahlia) hasn't even started molting yet. But from spring molt she was a fast molter like Lily. For a whole the run looked like a feather bed exploded. Cleaned up feathers twice a day. Of course at the same time the chicks (now 14 weeks) were also getting their new feathers.

Just glad I have got the chicken first aide supplies. Didn't get any tropical ointment (Neosporin), I have Watkins Petro Carbo Salve (kind of like bag balm). It can be used on animals & humans. Have used it on the dogs.

Have blu-Kote,Vetericyn Plus, poultry protector, permethrin garden & poultry dust, corid powder, rooster booster (I call it chicken gatoraide), Petro Carbo Salve and petroleum jelly. Think I have most of the bases covered.Only thing I think could be added to the first aide is vitamins.

I do have poultry dust too. I forgot about it. We generally cull sick birds as I haven't had any luck saving a sick bird long term no matter what I have tried. So I don't keep much stuff on hand anymore. :hmm

You are well stocked. :thumbsup

I figured the older hens definitely deserve the best I can do with all they went through. Free ranged for 2 years with very little feed given to them (I threw them parrot feed), avoiding coyotes, chicken killer dog, hawks, eagles, owls, racoons, possums and rats. Before we took them in.
Of course I believe all our animals (dogs, parrot, Cockatiel and chickens) deserve the best care. If putting down is the best thing, it will be done, won't allow suffering.
