sawdust?

I've read that you can use sawdust instead of shavings on the floor. I have an abundant free supply of sawdust. If I am doing the deep litter thing, can I use sawdust and shavings mixed? I'm assuming that sawdust is a bad idea for the babies, but once my chicks are grown and out in the coop is it doable?

im no exspert but i would think ya could use it. the stuff i use has so much dust in it anyway.i mean they roll and dust in the dirt so what could it hurt. jmo

I am assuming the sawdust is from non treated wood?! Always have to ask. I do woodworking as well and have loads of dust and shavings in a shop vac. I just need to run a magnet thru it to collect any staples or nails i've accidentally collected.

No, it's not treated. Just plain ol' regular white pine sawdust. I would have to sift it to get out the random nail and screw, but other than that it seems pretty clean.

Sawdust can get into the lungs and cause respiratory problems.

Hi Citygirl,

Just don't use it for little chicks. The older birds will be fine with it. If you're looking to do the deep litter method I would definitely mix shavings with it. The sawdust alone will compact too much.
