Hi everyone! My name is Melissa and I'm a mom of 4 boys, one in college, one heading to college this fall, and two in high school. My husband is retired Air Force (I also served 4 years which is how we met but then we went and had a bunch of kids and I began the stay home mom thing).
We currently have three dogs. A 13.5 yr old schnauzer, an 8 year old bichon frise and a 3 year old schnauzer. All very spoiled! I don't think they'd be very trustworthy around chickens, well, perhaps the bichon as he seems to like everything and everyone.
We have 1.4 acres out of city limits in South Carolina and this year we've got a decent garden going. After spending a lot on compost, fighting off bugs (I don't like to use pesticides), I begged my husband to let me have chickens. He agreed and I promised to be the main caregiver if he'd build me a nice coop. We're aiming for next spring. We've got our hands filled this summer and too many projects to devote time to building a coop till after Christmas.
I'm hoping to get about 3-5 buff orpingtons. I don't want to take a chance on a rooster and make the neighbors angry so I'll be ordering females only and hoping no males get mixed up in the batch.
Anyway, I'm just delurking so I can ask questions as I start getting ready to jump in. I've been reading the forum and articles for a few weeks now and am so relieved to have this site as a resource. The wealth of wisdom here is fantastic.
Look forward to knowing you all better! *wave*
