How I should treat my rooster, the poor guy has scales on his legs which seems quite painful?

That's it, thank you very much, it sounds quite serious. I shall start treatment first thing in the morning.
Actually, treating at night is ever so much easier as it is simply a matter of plucking the bird off the roost and doing the work. If the legs are very bad, I would bring the bird inside to soak the legs first and gently scrub them with a soft bristle tooth brush, dry the bird completely if it is cold where you are then dip the legs in oil, wipe off the excess then slather on Vaseline to help suffocate the SLM. Put back on the roost. After the initial treatment, apply Vaseline as needed when you see it has worn off, again doing so at night.
If the legs are very bad, he may need more than one soaking and gentle scrubbing treatment in addition to the regular application of Vaseline and the legs may never look normal again.
Feel free to post pictures of his legs.

Castor oil is a good product and inexpensive in stores. It is less greasy, and may not need to be applied as much. I second the recommendation of treating at night when they are asleep, since they are easy to catch and handle. Soaking the legs in warm soapy water is fine, but if you cannot bring the chicken inside to do that, just apply the oil and rub it up and under the scales to smother the mites. I have used old outdated crisco shortening, vaseline, canola oil, and coconut oil for leg mites, and most work fine.
