Scaley leg mite...treatment?

Today, I puchased poultry RX to rub on their legs....I thought vaseline might be to sticky with their litter of pine shavings. I also bought poultry mite powder to dust the chickens and their house with. I had all ready been planning a sand box for the chickens. I have been reading the online ideas about mixing DE with the sand. What is DE? Where do I get it? I just got back from 3 farm stores and none had DE. Any ideas?........

I read somewhere ash from an old fire, not hot, works great to, for them to dust bath in.

and the vaseline too???
