Scalpel Alternative

Is there any alternative to a scalpel? I have something similar but should i sterilize it first? I'm trying to cure bumblefoot.

Soak it well first and a tweezers should be able to loosen the black scab and is the tool that I use to pull out the plug. You can also use a dental tarter scraper (I'm forgetting the name of it at the moment) and flick around the scab with that.

I have a scalpel and have used it but I find that there's too much blood and it's too easy to cut a vein/artery which is very messy. Best to work it gently with as little cutting as possible. Be sure to have some blood stopping powder at hand. Let us know how it goes.

I use Exacto knives that are sterilized. I like the sharply pointed tip over the curved blades. Works better for me.
