Just noticed scaly leg mites on about half the flock this am. Here's the question: Just finished worming with pour on ivermectin about 3-4 weeks ago. Just thoroughly cleaned and dusted coop with DE two days ago. Should I repeat these two (ivermectin/thorough cleaning) along with treating legs with some type of oil product (seems to be consensus)? I hate to loose two more weeks of eggs - they just started laying regularly again! Also, though it prudent to treat everyone, not just those showing symptoms, right?

I use the cream for scabies in humans.. it works usually with one treatment... 1 tube will do about 15 - 20 chickens (depending if they are bantams or standard smooth leg or feathered leg)

I still ate the eggs during treatment the pharmacist said the amount that will pass through to the eggs is very little if any because its being treated topically and a one time usage

Wow....you're having a rough time. DE is a good preventative but it won't take care of bugs, mites etc once they are causing a problem. What you need is Sevin dust or poultry dust. Pull the new bedding away from the walls and give the floor a good sprinkle of dust. Especially the part where the wall meets the floor. Take the litter out of the nest boxes and sprinkle with dust also especially in the corners and cracks. Replace bedding. Sprinkle the roost with the dust and any connections where the roost meets the walls where the mites can hide.

I would dust the hens entire body but pay special attention to the tummy and tush area. The mites like to hide here. For the mites on the legs mix poultry dust or Sevin dust with vaseline. Probably 1 part dust to 3 parts vaseline. Mix into a paste. Apply a thin layer to the chickens legs. The dust will kill the mites chemically and the vaseline will smother them. Repeat every few days when it wears off. Treat all of the chickens. There is no withdrawal time for dusting.

For leg mites that are on the birds you can treat simply with Vaseline, Crisco, cooking oil -- anything that will smother them. Any that were biting the bird hopefully willl have been killed with the ivermectin; I would not retreat. It would be good to scrub the legs one time if you can, use plain old soapy water and a soft toothbrush, then oil or grease them once or twice a day. Treat the coop and roosts, too.
