My poor hens, and the new batch of chicks now have leg mites. This summer I cleaned out every corner of that coop, burned pine shavings, vacuumed, sprayed it down with Neem oil, coated the roosts with Neem oil, then later with coconut oil, dusted with Poultry Dust, filled with new shavings.

I soaked the hens' legs/feet in Neem oil/water and once dry applied vaseline every day or so until their legs were looking better. I occasionally still apply oil to the roosts when I think about it. They have looked great for the past few months, then yesterday I noticed some of their legs look awful:(

What else can I do?

Apply Nu-Stock to their legs and on roosts. It can be found in the equine section at a feed store. Shake the tube well and wear disposable gloves when applying it. It is an all natural product and it works.

It says this has sulfur in it; can I use my Sulphur Lime Dip that I used on our goats?
How often would I apply the Nu-Stock? For how long?
Thanks

Also, does anyone use sulfur powder in the coop or dust bathing spots?

Oops, one more. It's still very much winter here, cloudy and rainy/snowy all the time so I can't really give the coop a good cleaning with water/bleach, or other sprays right now: if the mites are in the wood in my coop, aren't the birds just going to continually get infected?

You can work a little Permethrin based poultry dust into the roosting bars to help control mites until you can give it a proper spray with Permethrin spray.

Scaly Leg Mites mostly live on the bird (under the leg scales) they can migrate from bird to bird, but if you apply your vaseline, nu stock or other ointment and work that under the scales you will suffocate them. Keep us with the leg care.
