Hello everyone! I will be purchasing my first flock of hopefully Australorps to include 2 geese (by recommendation from Poultry Hollow that I not get only 1). I hadn’t even looked for a local breeder, just they are the nearest hatchery other than TRactor Supply. Although I know there may well be casualties, I’m still terrified of killing them or having my dogs maul them. I don’t plan on coddling as they SHOULD be a meat :drool AND egg birds. We live on a lot of land, no cows as of yet and this will be our first foray into farming something other than grass and rocks! I do think I need to handle them somewhat so I can catch them to inspect for health reasons. I hope the geese will eventually be able to overcome my dogs but we will have to be quite vigilant with them:he. This will obviously be new for them as well and I have read many threads on how you guys recommend training dogs to leave them alone so we will start slowly with some introductions. My first question though is while I understand geese are supposed to grow up with the flock, I’m assuming they should be younger since getting all the birds at one time that are the same age is fairly unlikely. They should also grow faster? And should I feed them the same starter rations as the chicks? I’ve already been researching your site for a year off and on and now the time has come! I’ll be looking to you to help me not over do it! Thanks :duc
