My hens are about 5 months old and have alway been very friendly. Well, not very friendly, but if they're out in the yard they'll come running up to me, and they'll approach and eat out of my hand in the pen after a minute of checking me out.

Last week an opossum got into their pen. It scared them to death, but luckily they woke me up with their noise and the dog and I went out and took care of it before it managed to kill any of them. That was a week ago, and since then they've been acting different. They're noisier, for one thing, and a lot more shy. They won't run up to me in the yard and won't come eat out of my hand anymore. If I throw food into the pen they run away instead of toward it.

Is that something they'll get over? Should I be out there with them more or leave them be for a while? There's one out of the pen now that I can't get back in because I usually open the door and walk behind them and they'll run in, but this one freaks out and runs off into the woods if I come near:(

Sounds like they are spooked by something(s) on a regular basis. They sound like they don't have any confidence about their safety in general.

Can you do anything to make them feel more protected?
