my new female (Scarface) has a pronounced scissor beak. I’ve watched her drink and eat fine, and since they are all a month old I assumed she’d have died as a chick if she was struggling to eat or drink. She just can’t quite preen or precisely pick things up, “scoops” all her food. Is scissor beak something that gets worse as time goes on? any quick fixes?

this is a slightly blurry photo because she was moving but her bottom beak cross hatches the top a little.

I have a scissors beak rooster. He is a truly awesome bird. I have had him quite a while and I have never had to mess with his beak. I guess it just depends on how you want to manage his beak. His beak can get caught up on the feeder every now and again but he eats fine. Also has no issue drinking water. I have heard of people filing the beaks of they become to much for the bird so you might want to look into that. Also my rooster also had issues preening at first. He seems to have worked it out though so maybe give it some time and see how she progresses in the next few months.

Yeah I was planning on just leaving her be because she seems perfectly happy as is, albeit a little funny looking eating and drinking! Thank you! Just overthinking things as usual!😂

No problem. Just one other suggestion is to keep an eye out for any bullying. Sometimes the scissors beak bird becomes a bully victim. If you see it put the bully bird in a cage for three days and leave her in the coop. It usually corrects the action on the spot. I had one bird that needed a week of chicken jail but she came around and behaves well with my roo now.

I have a rescue hen who has a scissor beak.

Like @Chickengobbler mentioned, she does get bullied a bit, but that's also because she's half blind. She is so sweet and is very feisty. I haven't really had to do anything for her, she eats and drinks fine.

One thing about your quail, I wouldn't breed her. It is possibly a genetic thing and you don't want to breed that. This is what I've read anyway.

Perfect. I won’t hatch any of the eggs, just eat ‘em! She doesn’t seem to get bullied, she’s actually the one who tends to peck the male if she’s tired of him😂 I’ll keep an eye out!
