I have a Barred Rock hen who decided 10 days ago that she would be broody. Now my book from Meyers says "infrequent" for broodiness on a BR but someone forgot to tell this hen.
I don't mind - it's my first time ever having a hen that will hatch chicks. I'm going to move her tonight though - she keeps stealing eggs that my other hens lay and this morning when I was going to make scrambled eggs, the first egg had blood in it and the second egg a developing chick. I no longer wanted scrambled eggs.
She stole the favorite laying corner and the other hens still wanted to lay their eggs there. She kept stealing the eggs and shuffling them under her until she had 13 eggs - I thought the eggs I brought into the house yesterday were good... I guess they were good if I was going to incubate them.
I'm leaving Sunday for Florida for a week so putting her eggs in my incubator is not a possibility. They should hatch on or about June 1st. Whatever is left then, I will candle and place in the incubator and cross my fingers.
How do you break a broody? When will she start laying eggs again?
