Looking at my young bantam wyandottes today, I was suprised to see how little they scratch, compared to my RiRs. They peck the ground and catch insects but hardly ever dig around. My RiRs, they were real garden wreckers and dug up my whole lawn in matter of weeks. I enjoyed watching their enthousiasm but was less happy with the result ;-)
So I was wondering...why the difference? Do my wyandottes scratch less just because they're smaller? Or need less food because they do not have to build 5 giant eggs every week? Maybe have a different preference for certain foods?
There must be differences between all breeds I suppose. Is there some sort of scratchiness index? What breeds dig al the way to the earth's core, and what breeds only gently tickle your lawn? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Maybe we could make a scratchiness list?
