I really want to get some chickens and I have everything planned out but my dad hates the idea because they would scrat up the grass and "turn it into a mud bath!"
Is it really that bad or is he exaggerating to make me not get them?

He's not exaggerating - chickens are notorious for scratching grass down to dirt. Add rain = mud! However, there are alternatives! Lots of folks put sand in the run - it drains off the rain and makes for a cleaner environment. Do a BYC search - type in "sand in the coop" or "sand in the run" and you can research it. Hope you can convince your dad.

Would your dad let you have a permanent coop & run for the chickens, so they don't scratch the grass in the rest of his yard?

They can make a mess - really depends on where you live & the weather. There are lots of options. Hope you & your Dad are able to come to terms with this. Do lots of research so you can give Dad great info
