When I moved the new chicks out to the coop instead of just keeping them in with the doors closed for several days I put hardware cloth over the pop door opening on the inside. I could still close the door for safety and warmth at night but during the day the door was open so they could see their new run and feel the breezes.

I put these guys in the coop Tuesday morning and let them out for the first time when I got home from work today.

Other times when I've introduced chicks to the run they've always been very fearful and then a pain to get back into the coop. This time the chicks were mildly cautious but were more interested in tasting everything they'd been seeing than being afraid. Because they weren't afraid they bounced in and out of the coop at their leisure then when it started to get dark all trooped back in to bed. It was wonderful!

From now on when ever I can this is the method I'm using to move them out.

I was thinking of doing something similiar. I thought i would put a small fenced in area in front of the coop door before I let them free range or let them into the bigger fenced area. I think they'll just be happy to get out of the box and have more space and they will beable to go in and out at their leisure.
