Our coop and run are almost finished and I am considering planting some sort of vine along the western side to climb up the hardware cloth to provide shade for the girls. Does anyone have any suggestions about what would be a good choice. I'm in California and our summers our hot, so anything I plant would have to like those types of conditions.

permanent or perennial vines:
Kiwi (might not like full day sun in dry climate)
Grape
Passion vine
black berry
climbing rose
Star Jasmine

summer only vines:
beans
squash
pumpkin
melon

Most of these will need support or attaching to the structure. These vines aren't poisonous so if the chickens get them there shouldn't be a problem.

One of the fastest growing and pretty vines that I've grown here is potato vine, you mostly find it with white flowers but I think there are purple too. I put 3 plants along a fence in the spring and by the end of the summer it was covered and they bloom continuously... I've planted them in Carmichael and Sacramento both times in full Sacramento sun with good results.
