Sealing exterior of a wooden coop, advise needed.

Hello all,

I have a coop coming in that is made of fir. My question is what is the best method to making the wood last? Sealing it or painting it? And does is mater if I use an oil base sealer or water based (also same question with the paint)?

Any good outdoor paint should seal, as long as it is applied well and especially allowed to fully cure as the product specifies.
