I have a coop cam to make sure all the chickens get in before sunset and the door comes down. I've been watching them lately and there is a drama to "finding their spot" on the roost. Rooster is almost always first in and goes right for his spot on the upper roost. Others wander in randomly and take "their spots" but this always creates a traffic jam. I have a ramp going up to the roosts so they don't have to fly up to them, and if a hen comes in early and plops down on the roost by the top of the ramp, the others have to maneuver over/around/behind her. I watched last night as hens desperately tried to go over, then jump to the upper roost, walk across past the hen blocking the lower roost then jump back down to the lower roost, etc. Pecking order determines if a hen can roost on the upper roost, my younger SLWD, Bard Rock, and Austrolorp are low pecking order so they must roost on the lower roost. I never knew it was a seating order. They are not always in the same exact spot, but always on the same high/low roost.
