I have two Silkies that lay almost daily during periods when they aren't broody. They are really reliable layers of small, cream tinted eggs.

I have now added two more bantam chicks to my flock: a Mille Fleur D'Uccle and a Silver Sebright (one of the Silkies is actually raising these babies at the moment), and I am just curious whether any of you have had any personal experience with either of these two bantam breeds as layers. Do they lay well for you? How often? Are the eggs big enough to eat? What color? Do they go broody often? Thanks!

My d'uccle do NOT lay much in the winter, but now that it is spring and summer they lay very well. Maybe five eggs a week per hen.

The girls are very sweet, and my kids love them. My roosters have been all over in terms of temperament. Some great, some awful.

The eggs are pretty small, even for a bantam, but of course you can eat them. People even eat quail eggs, and those ARE tiny! :lau The eggs are interesting because they are very elongated. They aren't a true chalk white like my Leghorns, but a creamy white.

Mine have sometimes thought about going broody for a few days, but then changed their minds.

I have never had Silkies or Sebrights.
