Ok so we have kept chickens for a year now and this is out first try at hatching. We had 3 eggs under a broodie sikie but she got bored and left them so I got an incubator and popped them in. 1 hatched last week quite happily but the other is hatching just now. Its been 28 hours or so and has been in the same position now for some time. Chirping away but seems stuck and not sure if I should help it a bit. It has one leg out but looks to be in a position where it can get a good push to get free.

I have never hatched eggs myself, but I have watched a few videos on it. Generally you should never help a chick hatch but if you notice that it has been struggling to get out for quite some time, it might be time for you to step in. I was going to ask at the start if the chicks head was out of the shell yet, because I can’t quite make it out in the photo. If not, very, very carefully break shards of the egg off so that it can get its first breath otherwise it may be to weak to even break out fully.

Here is a video that I’ve watched on hatching chicks, it might help!

So its out but looks exhausted. Hopefully a night in the incubator keeping warm and drying out will perk it up. Fingers crossed
