I just hatched a few bantam Polish chicks and am new to the breed, but these guys are from great breeding stock and I had thought about possibly showing for the first time. I am keeping all of them, but I was wondering what qualities do I look for in these tiny guys right now since there is nothing on these tiny things I can really compare to the standard until they get older. They all have huge vaulted heads compared to my older lower quality chicks. I can wait to see what they turn out like, but am just trying to get a better eye for this breed and any input would be great

The only way to select newly hatched chicks for quality is with the use of a Magic 8 Ball.

Well I don't have one of those, will a scrying mirror do?

At what age should I see characteristics I am looking for and what are they?

Not sure what a scrying mirror is but it should work as well as a Magic 8 Ball. You really should consider a Magic 8 Ball though. They make decision making so much easier.
The characteristics to look for are those that adhere to the Standard description for the breed & variety. Not really something anyone can simply answer here. If you're interested in breeding/showing you need to buy a copy of the Standard of Perfection. Used copies are reasonably priced. Check EBAY or ABE.com.
Other than obvious disqualifications & major defects you really can't begin to cull until the birds are mature & in their adult plumage: 6 months or so.

*sigh* ok, I hate to wait, but I already picked my favorites, though I love them all. Can't wait to see the silver lace feather out. A scrying mirror is basically a crystal ball for poor people.

Does the leg color change as they grow? A few of them have mottled looking legs. Do the leg colors differ from color to color? I looked at the standard, but couldn't find any mention of it.
