I have someone from Craig's List who wants to buy ducklings for a photo shoot. Said she will keep them for about a week, then either give them back, or resell them herself; it's up to me. I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, as long as she knows how to care for them, it's not a big deal. But I guess my worry is how they will be handled during the shoots. I'm sure this is for Easter pics with children. I've seen her ad on CL for pics with lambs, chicks, etc. I've never been to 'chick days' at the feedstore, but have heard the horror stories about how they are manhandled by children. What do you all think? Am I being too paranoid? Or is this a good opportunity to make double my money? I honestly don't know, but I don't want to put my ducklings in harm's way.

Edited to add that she did this last year, and said the babies grew up fine.

I'd do it. She will protect the little creatures because she NEEDS them for the next pictures

It's not like she is going to let some child slam them or hold them if they are squeezing too hard. I'm sure she doesn't want to have to buy 30 ducklings, as that would cut into her profit margin. I figure she'll take better care of them than some folks would, because to her they are an investment.

I love all types of poultry and if it were myself, I would not do this, even if I could double my money. They are babies and rely on you for their safety and wellbeing. To me, it would be like me giving my newborn child to someone to "borrow" without me being around to protect the child. They may be only ducks, but they are babies.

Take care, I know you will make the right decision.

Really? I don't think it is quite that serious. I'd protect my kiddo over my ducks any day. I don't think that is a fair comparison in the least.

One year I ended up with three weak yellow chicks that had been all day long in a studio doing photo. I asked if they had been eating and they said that morning. They thought you could feed a chick like you would a puppy,a few times a day. The chicks had been doing photos without lunch break. They grew up to be large WRs.

When I had show dogs - they were used now and then for dog food ads/ purina calendars etc. I usually went along(or my mother) - they didn't really mistreat them but, they would do alot of photos - trying to get the right 'look'. This could go on for some length of time. My dogs were mature, and would pretty much stay the way they wanted them.

I can imagine with baby animals it would be very exhausting to them - to be in strange location, handled by strangers, everything is new & probably frightening to them - and again they would probably be set up or held a certain way and not want to cooperate.

I don't think it would cut into the photographers profit to have to replace ones that ah.., didn't survive or got injured.
