Selling Live Birds and Free Slaughter…

Another way around the law is to sell them as dog food. Alot of people around here who want to sell raw milk (it's iligal, how ridiculous is that) just sell it as cat food, its still processed and chilled safely for human consumption, but sold as cat food, and if the customer chooses to drink it, thats not the farmers problem. The point I'm trying to make is you can process them the same way you normally would, for human consumption, make sure everything is safe, sell it to someone for them to eat, just call it dog food, because animal food laws are almost non existent. Just make sure that the customers know what you are doing so that they don't think your actually trying to sell them dog food.

Local and state governments can make laws more stringent than federal law, but not less stringent. In Nebraska for instance, you can only sell birds processed at a state or federal licensed facility. The state facilities are not inspected by USDA.

A lot depends all the way down to your venue location. In FL you're pretty much good with a "Not for human consumption" label if you're really paranoid (both meat and milk) but my county and city both look the other way on this matter.

Unfortunately, though, it sounds like your local enforcement is aggressive on this subject in your area. I'd be *extremely* careful with any alternative route you try. Google your county's code (usually, that would fall under animal laws or zoning laws) Keep a copy of any details you can find. Contact your local ag extension without giving any identifying info on yourself and ask them about any additional meat laws/regulations for your area and any meat restrictions. Ask for specific section #s and details on obtaining a hard copy. Don't just accept their word on anything, obtain the evidence and keep it available at all times. Know your rights and laws to the letter. Loopholes are often intentional, such as selling live with a complementary butcher or Labeling "Not for Human Consumption". Some states even allow for "cottage foods" so you could make chicken pot pies with it instead and sell those.

My family had an "underground" butcher shop for years, until we got old & started dying off. Just be careful who you sell to. Shhhhhhh
