Selling Poults

Yeah all I can do is lower my price and educate. I have essentially no competition. No major breeders or hatcheries in my area. I priced based on the cost without shipping of ordering what I have from a hatchery. Do not mean to be greedy. Finally sold 3 yesterday. That is out of what will be at least 50 before hatching is over.LOL

In our area there are quite a few people that have turkeys and one year we were selling out of everything we hatched so the next spring we got the bright idea to corner the market and cash in. Some other people had the same idea and every week the local sale paper and craigslist had turkey add after turkey add. I was waist deep in turkeys all summer and into the fall. Just as a try we took some to a local flea market that caters to our local hispanic population and they sold like mad. It actually got to be kind of fun, the little kids loved the turkeys, the adults were thinking dinner. We ended up haggling in both spanish and english where we each only knew a few words.

When you sell for $7.00. What age are the poult?. I have some that are 3 weeks and some that are 8 weeks. Surely for $7 that is newly hatched like the hatcheries. If you sell older poults, what pricing do you use? I want to take mine to a local trade mart. People close to me want my eggs for free and I'm sure they would take a turkey for free. I have Red Bronze, Bourbon Red, and Bronze. I might try Cragslist if I can find out how to price them.

Thanks,

There lies my problem, I have not sold any and I don't know how to price them by their ages. I don't have that large a number because I knew I would have this problem. When I come up with something, I will let you know.

I charge 7.00 per poult up to two weeks old. If I had any that got older than that I would add a dollar per week up to say, 12 dollars. Luckily, I've never had to deal with that as they're always gone by the second week.

The $10 I started with is for newly hatched through 2 weeks. Will have to try starting lower and adding $1 a week after 2 weeks to cover feed like farmerlor.

I have turned down 1 buyer who asked if I could deliver 2 poults 200 miles away. No joke.

I have been hatching Narragansett turkeys and I sell them for $10 each. I have been selling each hatch that I have had. We are having a swap in Georgia May 15th so I will take a few to that to see if they sell there. I tried to sell hatching eggs and not very many people wanted to mess with them, so I just started incubating them. People want the poults.
