Selling Roosters?

We are getting great prices for roosters here at the livestock auction, but no one is concerned about if someone handled them or not.

As far as someone caring about if they were handled with the intention of keeping them in a backyard flock, sorry not going to make them worth more. Some people even think that causes them to be aggressive (I don't agree)
Handling has always had positive results with mine. Only Roosters/Cockerels that won't tame down is a Man Fighter. Those are genetically human aggressive.

@Oakandfeather I don’t know where you are located. It sounds like some people live in areas where there is no demand for roosters, but I have found that if I put them on Craigslist and wait, sooner or later someone who wants a rooster for their flock will buy them. Or else someone who wants one to eat.

As far as charging more because it’s been handled, I don’t think that is much of a draw unless it’s going to be a 4h bird. I would probably charge the same as what people buy your regular roosters for.

I have sold them for more than roosters that aren’t handled lol… I simply wanted to know other people’s price ranges. For example, depending on breed, a well handled one has sold for $20-30. Not handled stays around $10-15

In my experience, the free roosters are not well handled, if at all. So it would make sense they’d be used for food
I’m looking for a big black Malay rooster, the meaner the better. I’ve got raccoons and possums and and eagles and every other thing that lives in the woods climbing over my fence and killing my hens. I had another big old rooster that if nothing else would go apeshit and wake me up when something was in the yard but unfortunately something crept in and grabbed him. I want a huge monster rooster that’ll look out for hens. Just once I’d like to come out and see pieces of raccoon or possum spread all over the yard instead feathers and pieces of chicken

Oh, well if you’re getting those prices for roosters, then demand must be decent.

I sell baby barnyard mix roosters for $5, adult-size for $10 and purebred breeds of roosters for $20-25.

Unfortunately, that's not how it's going to work.

Chickens don't have rods in their eyes and have zero night vision. If they had a motion activated light then maybe they could fight off some predators in the coop, but in the dark in a coop they're screwed

You're going to be better off predator proofing, a rooster no matter how mean can only do so much against predators. Even though a rooster *can* do a surprising amount of damage if they get a good hit in, at the end of the day they're still just chickens
