My five young hens have a 10 x 10 run, but it is in a half acre chain link fenced yard. I would like to let them free range some during the day, but my husband is concerned they will fly over the fence. (He was totally opposed to getting "dirty chickens", but has grown very protective of "the girls".)

Should I limit free range time to only when I can supervise?

I would until you see how they react and you get comfortable with the idea. I don't know how high your fence is but they can probably get over it if they are properly motivated. Somearenatural roamers and somearenot. I don't know your predator situation so whether you let them free range with or without your being there is a personal decision.

I let my free range all day even when I am not home, but I guess it really is a personal decision. I would start to let them out when you can watch them and see how they are doing. The first couple of days they will probably stay pretty close to their coop but after they get a little bit more adventurous they surely could clear a regular height fence, which doesn't mean that they will.... some are just a little bit more curious than others.
