Hey,
We are newbies at this at want to make sure we do things right. We started with about 40 chickens together (we were sent 7 roosters as chickens for "warmth") So from the very beginning we had a rooster coop and a hen coop. The original roosters have either died or are in the freezer. We thought we only had 2 more roosters from a straight run which we separated out of the hen's coop and put in the rooster coop. (a Rhode Island red and an easter egger). They get along fine. We had 2 more easter eggers in the hen coop that we were watching. Our questionable hens are definitely roosters. They are still in the hen coop. So my question is will all the roosters get along as long as they are away from the hens and have lots of room to roam? Should we even move them out of the hens coop? Their coop is not within sight line of the hens. We might want the raise more meat birds in the future so we want to keep the roosters but don't know if that is a crazy thought to keep all 4 roosters. So far they are about 4 months old and all are friendly, docile and not aggressive towards the hens, each other or people. We had one that was aggressive - he is gone now and the coop has completely settled down. My husband is completely freaked by the idea of accidentally getting or selling a fertilized egg which is why he wants to keep them separate. Do we even need to do this? What is the likelihood of unknowingly getting a fertilized egg? Thanks!
