I got 1 chick from my eggs and it is so cute. It went outside today with the rest of the chicks that are older. I keep them in groups so a lone chick doesn't get picked on. I had 2 of mine in with the little banty I got from the swap and when I put them in the pen I have a black orphington that is a bully and it kept trying to pick on the new ones expecially the little banty. The oldest and biggest one from the new group kept standing up to the bully and protecting his flock. The bully would try to go around him to get to the little ones and their "leader" would get between them everytime. Thats gonna be a good protector.
The black orphington has the lavender gene so I plan to keep him till he gets bigger. I'm sure somebody will want him. I have another little cockerel that is a lavender and of course he's a keeper. And I have a grown blue orphington that is still waiting for some girls of his own. Thats how I ended up with the 2 little cockerels. I got some eggs in hopes of getting a pullet or two for my blue fella. I wonder why it's so hard to get girls when i'm trying for them. I did get lucky with my silkies and I got 1 maybe 2 boys out of 7.
Here's a pic. The swap chick is the small buff one and the yellow one is the protector. The brown one protected the banty too but it was also getting protected by the yellow one.

This is the little bully. He's bigger now and has more feathers and less yellow and more black.
