Hello all,

I recently helped one of my serama hens that was egg bound. She now will not stand, and when I ty to make her stand she kicks her legs like crazy. I thought that after a day or two she would be ok, but she is still in the same condition. I have her in a small cage inside and I have been keeping her hydrated with hydro hen mixed in her water. I have fed her scrambled egg, which she loves and eats it up. She has pooped, just not as much as before. I am worried that there may be permanent nerve damage and I am not sure what to do now.

Her last egg was 3 days ago, which was the one that did not want to come out without help. She has had some crumbles, but not much else other than scrambled eggs. I did give her crushed up tums in water the day she was egg bound. I have not put her on any vitamins, because I did not know what else to do, thus my post.

I would keep her on calcium daily for the next week at least and start giving her B vitamins for her legs. I also would recommend giving her only 1-2 eggs max per day and then removing what’s left after she eats what’s she can. Keep her actual chicken feed crumbles with her at all times. Even wetting it will make it more palatable for her. Chickens can become vitamin deficient very quickly if they are not kept on a well balanced diet. Also give her access to oyster shells at all times.
