Hi I'm new here. I bought a year old serama rooster in April along with two others. This specific one was supposed to be a hen but here we are. For about a week he's been making a strange noise and stopped yesterday. Yesterday I also noticed his tail is sideways, his comb looks pale, and he is very tired he won't perch at night. I've been looking all over the internet and can't find what could be wrong with him. was hoping I could get some answers here. thanks in advance.

Welcome To BYC!

What do you feed your rooster?

O.k. just a bunch of questions to try to help possibly narrow down a few thoughts in my head.....
Has he been under any stress? (new birds added, changes in environment, predators, change of feed, etc.)
The tail suddenly going Wry (crooked) along with him being tired/not perching is concerning. Could he have fallen or gotten into a fight?
Have you looked at his preening (oil) gland at the base of the tail to make sure it's not infected?
His vent is clear of poop/debris, discharge/gleet and he's pooping o.k. (no straining)?
Has he ever been wormed?
No signs of lice/mites?

I feed him chick feed because I read to do that for bantams.
I wouldn't say he's been under any stress.
There is a chance he could have fallen off his perch and he is with other roosters so he might have gotten in a fight.
I have not looked at his preening.
I separated him and his poop looks fine but there is some around his vent. He seems to be pooping fine though.
He has never been wormed and i don't think its bugs. His feathers look normal no patches or rough spots.

Since you are finding anything obvious, I would try vitamins to see if that helps.
He's a little fella (so cute!) I would give him 1/4 tablet human B-Complex and 400IU Vitamin E for a week. A little egg would be good too for Selenium which helps with the uptake of E.

Make sure that chick feed is the non-medicated variety; the medicine they put in the feed blocks absorption of some vitamins that coccidia (parasite) needs to survive; no vitamins, no more coccidia. Poop stuck to his vent / butt feathers could be an indicator of worms; a float test at your vet is your best bet... but barring that as an option, you could treat your entire flock for coccidiosis with Corid & also a worming product containing Flubendazole (for roundworms & tapeworms, primarily)... I am suggesting two different medications for internal parasites as they work on different types of parasitic infestations and they work in different ways from each other. You can put both medications in their water at the same time without ill effects. Not all worm infestations can be seen with the naked eye.

Oh, he’s so lovely!!

I don’t know much about the comb and not perching (see suggestions below) , but I do know the sideways tail is a common genetic issue with Seramas. It won’t hurt the bird at all, but it’s something that would disqualify them from showing... at least I had heard that. I’m still learning about Seramas.

About the other issues....Did you look in his mouth to see if he’s got anything growing in his throat? There are a couple ailments that could be going on in there. Fowl pox, I think is one. Tapeworm the other.

Paleness and lethargy could be from internal parasites or external... do you treat for worms and do you have a good dust bath for them? I recommend the food grade diatomaceous earth for them. Have you taken a look in his feathers for mites?

I should add also, a couple of times I’ve had a chicken make weird noises from their throats. A few were serious issues while others were not at all- just more of a discomfort or nuisance for the bird. Your bird, if those are recent pics you posted, looks ok. Of course that might not mean he’s ok, but just wanted to say, his face seems very chipper and alert. He could be stressed from the other roos. That too could cause paleness and not roosting with the others. Some roos are total bullies while some are not.
