Those who have owned the breeds:
How have their temperaments been, both hens and roosters?
How do they get along with your other breeds, if you have any?
How many eggs do you typically get from them?

Trying to find first hand experiences while debating on what breed to go with next. I have one oegb hen that I got through craigslist, and I just kind of fell in love with their dainty, firey spirit . I'd like to find a breed similar in type and temperament, hen wise. The roosters that she was paired with...werent as wonderful.

Sebright temperment? Oh, awful! They’re really for looks, i assure you i spend so much time with my chickens they will snuggle in my lap forever, but even the SECOND a sebright hatched out of a egg? Would not let me touch them! It takes about an hour to catch these guys. Even when a few days old they wouldn’t let me lay a finger on them. Even when sick!

Seramas are spicy, same fiery spirit your referring to, it takes a bit of working. Sebrights yes, but again, very flighty and very skittish.

Serama eggs i got *almost* every day, maybe closer to every other? Sebrights can’t be for sure because i got rid of one to young and the adult was a rooster.

If you want to bond with your chickens, really get down to earth, i would vote a Serama. Mine slept in my hair and in my shirt, she chirped for me to hold her and just loved attention.

Don’t take this the wrong way, i am not in any way against Sebrights! Their gorgeous, but they’re not a breed i would ever look into getting again.
And my Sebrights would not stop crowing, ever. Lots of people find it charming, but something to keep in mind if you aren’t looking for that. Even when one was like 3 weeks old he crowed. You might think because their so small the crowing would be much more quiet.

*Its not*

Apologies for my long reply!

Also, i know your not talking about this breed on your thread, but Japanese Bantams are really wonderful, you do have to work with them or they will become quite flighty (not as much as a Sebright though) but their docile, quiet, and very calm! I have an adult rooster that is gorgeous and really doesn’t crow.

They lay well, every single day for mine, though the eggs are small (roughly 1 OZ)

This has to be one of my top favorite chicken breeds, the rooster sounds like a squeak toy, they love to be held, i just love them.

Seramas are adorable and lovable, but I must say the Sebright is my favorite.
All chickens are different, but this was my experience with Sebrights:
I have a female Silver Laced Sebright named Stormy who has lots of personality!
She's a bit bossy towards the other hens but never aggressive, and she's a real love. She is a mother of two precious youngsters (crossed with OEGB) and she is very good at making sure they are safe.
Sebrights are super hardy and have long lifespans, but they definetly aren't the best egg layers (not terrible, though)! If you want a productive bantam, I probably wouldn't recomend the Sebright.
But even though Sebrights work for me, they might not work for you. This is my info for you, and I hope it was helpful!

You both were very helpful! Thank you. And @Chicken poppy I do not mind the long reply at all. I appreciate the details! It's needed in making a good decision about what others have experienced, personally, with the breeds. I havent looked into the Japanese bantams but after your suggestion I am going to.
I do love my roosters crows lol so that isn't a huge set back. But a quiet one would be nice too 😂. I have silkie boys in my "silkie sanctuary" that enjoy showing off their vocals daily. Sometimes nightly lol. But I definitely understand how loud a little roo can be. My oegb came in a trio. Two roosters and her. They would come to my window every morning at 5 am and begin their show lol. And they were SMALL. Unfortunately they were also aggressive, which I can't do. Especially with my kids loving to help with the birds. They went to my dad's farm, where that isnt an issue. But once they left SHE began crowing. It sounded just like them. It only lasted until I got another rooster, then she stopped.
@Fwoof my sister in law also adores her sebrights! She has said the same about them as you have. I have a love for all things in small packages, lol. I may end up with both at this rate 😅

Im sure you’ll end up getting a great bird but its always so hard to pick!

Thats so weird! I had my top hen do that, maybe its because of dominance?

If your ever interested in Japanese Bantams, i might be able to get you some eggs. They really are precious, something i love about them is how gentle they are. They don’t bite hard or peck to firm. If someone steps in front of my larger chickens, they will peck them to draw blood, but these guys just give a little tap. They are very kid friendly.

Anyway, of course all breeds have their downsides, Japanese Bantams just work for me personally. I have a soft spot for them.

Please let us know what bird(s) you end up getting!

I do believe it is a dominance thing as far as the crowing goes. My pixie likes hanging with my big girls (RIR, NHR, barred rock, OE) and is still second in command here LOL. She has no issues what so ever and will choose them over the silkies any day. I guess it's just her big personality 😂. I will definitely let you know what I end up with! After researching more into the Japanese bantams I may take you up on that offer if I go that route. They are really beautiful looking birds as well. 🥰
