I am so frustrated i just have to rant a bit and since i know many people on here feel the same way sometimes....
I live in the middle of a small town in a rural area but they have a no livestock ordinance well hubby is on town council and they say its fine we will call your goat a pet. Sweet awesome thank you to those people so much for allowing that. A few other people in town have chickens even roos so thats be ok since day one. My old bunny got out of her cage and the dogs wanted to play....so DH got me a new one to cheer me up and since i couldn't hold the old one since she was a rescue it was great. Well my neice and nephew got a bunny too and he lived with us for awhile until they got their hutch built. My neice is 8 and would take him to the park next door since their dog cannot be trusted with small furry things and was swarmed by kids since day one. These kids knew i had a bunny too and that her bunny lived with mine, well came home one day and bunny was loose and her hideaway box was by the gate. Was not happy someone had to of let my rabbit out and had had her in the box apparently then just turned her loose!!!! Got my chicks a few weeks later have them in their outdoor pen and kids constantly are sticking grass and weeds through potentially getting pecked and injured. Bought my bottle baby goat 2 months later and now guess what they are trying to pet my goat!!!!!!!!! we live in the country they have seen plenty of goats before and have been told repeatedly do not stick your hands in my fence i have two dogs who like to nibble ones a puppy and hasn't gotten over it yet and the other is just mouthy and now a bottle baby who likes to suck on fingers! no matter what i do these kids keep screwing with my animals! Came home today and my father in law told me that my puppy and the goat were in the park with these two kids who i suspect are the same ones who were barking at my dogs yesterday!!!! One kid said my dog "bit" him and my father in law said no he just does that when he wants petted. great so now my father in law admitted that my "pit bull" habitually bites. My dogs just on my gate constantly when i get home they are so excited to see me so they could not have let themselves out. I already have to wade through 2 dogs and a goat i don't want to have to add a padlock to the mix. do parents not teach their kids manners anymore? I mean seriously i have my animals for me and my family. I do not mind educating kids about them but dont ask me everytime i step out my door if you can pet my goat. How do you get kids to just leave you and yours alone? i just cannot fathom people letting their kids go into other peoples yards and mess with their animals. i loved animals from a child til now and never ever touched anyones animal unless invited to do so.

its not always easy being an animal owner. Im a mother, & when my daughter grows older, she will know that you always ask permission to pet someones dog/animal & you dont just run around petting dogs. Some people dont see a problem with being invasive on other people. Or with being just plain annoying. Maybe talk to these childrens parents & explain to them that you dont so much have a problem with the kids wanting to observe & pet the animals, but that youd prefer if it were on this day, or at this time & be sure its completely supervised. Feel better

I feel for you.. but for the safety of your animals I would padlock the gate, at least for awhile until the kids lose interest.

My neighbor's little girls are sweet but i deal with "can I pet your chicken" and "can we have the eggs" nearly every time I go in my backyard as their yard is higher than mine and they can see me walk out to the coop. The first time it was cute... and it started because my boyfriend picked up a chicken and let them pet it through the fence. Now he's in Boston and I'm sneaking out there so I dont have to talk to them every time i'm in my backyard

The mom never intervenes either.. at some point i would tell my kids to let the neighbor be in her own backyard.... These same kids come over and pick my flowers right off plants on my porch! So anyway.. I feel your pain , if there was some way to block their view of my yard I would. Granted I wouldnt mind if it was once every few weeks but daily is just irritating.

I'm sorry to hear you're having troubles like this. I hate to say it but really the only way to ensure you get left alone (and to ensure your own protection from liability) is to fence in your place and put locks on the gates. It's what I had to do when we lived in town once and I hated it... it was a major inconvenience for me... but it was better than taking the risk of the kids getting hurt on my property.

I see you're in Ohio, and I can tell you that Ohio has two laws that would not bode well for you should something ever happen. One is what they call "Attractive nuisance doctrine." Basically it means if you have something on your property that kids would think is cool and fun... (such as a swimming pool or farm animals) then it is considered understandable in the eyes of the law for the kids to be attracted to your property and, thus, YOU should take measures to prevent that. If the kids get hurt on your property, the doctrine of attractive nuisance could come into play and the courts might think you should have taken better precautions to prevent it.

The other law is absolute liability. This applies mostly for dogs, but can be applied to other animals as well. Owning a dog in Ohio is a serious thing. There is no one-bite rule, no predisposition to viciousness, etc. Whatever your dog does, you are liable for it... NO MATTER WHAT. Absolute liability is absolute. Not very many states have such a law in place, but Ohio does.

I was a claim rep for State Farm insurance for several years. I quit to be a SAHM five years ago, but as far as I know, the laws haven't changed. You may want to talk to your homeowner's insurance agent to get more details and be sure you're protected, and get a sturdy fence with gates that lock!

Good luck!!

i feel so much better now! i dont want people to think i'm a child hater because i'm looking forward to being a mom in the future i just am very territorial of what is mine....

We are planning on getting a privacy fence sometime in the future but this is our first house we got married less than an year ago and i'm 19 and hes only 21 so thats down the road lol we are doing good by having a house that we have completely renovated. I would love to electrify the whole fence but then i would be liable if their kid got shocked but if i have the signs i'm in the all clear right? even if the kid cannot read?
the attractive nuisance law confuses me because if i have a 5+ foot fence and a gate is my property technically secure? just like if a kid goes over a fence to get to a pool you are ok because you tried to take preventative measures?
what if the kids are provoking my dog does that make them at fault if the gets excited and jumps on them and nibbles?
sigh i guess we just have to adapt with these changing times of sue happy people and parents who fail to teach their children manners
