I'm setting my 1st grade classes' 37 chicken eggs tonight in my new Hova-bator 2362 so that they're on the same hatch time table as my 5 BR turkey eggs. Only thing is, it's spring break right now... hehehe

oh well. When they come back on monday, the chicken eggs will be on day 5ish and the turkeys will be about on day 12.
The only complication will be transporting them to school on either Sunday or Monday morning. It's a 20 minute drive.

I hope it all works out ok, for the kids sake (and mine)!

Anyone else setting today?

Oh I forgot to say a BIG thank you to aussieheeler from BYC!

I got to meet her today :frowand she gave me 15 of her eggs, mostly beautiful dark maran eggs!

The rest of the eggs are from my chickens, but I just got a roo about a week and a half ago. I've been checking for fertility and only a few have been good. Plus that darn roo went after me today while I was checking the coop for eggs right before leaving.

Now I have a purple knot on my shin!

I'm hoping one of aussieheelers eggs hatch a beautiful new roo who we'll raise to be nice! Who knows what the people did or acted like towards our current roo. I've tried staying out in the run while taking treats out there, but he either stays away or gets chased away by my BR tom (he's kinda protective of me apparently).

Hey...I am with you..setting 42 silkies!
That is such a wonderful project for the students. When I was in the 8th grade I was in 4-H and very serious in their animal science part. For county demonstration my dad built me an incubator and the county extension agent found a dozen fertile eggs for me. Now back them...1970...there wasn't a lot of to do with humidity levels and temps where if you could keep it between 100 and 105. A light bulb was the heat source and a bowl of water for humidity. What I did was crack an egg every 3 days and put the embryo into a babyfood jar with formaldihide (sp). I drew pictures of them on poster board and labeled part of the embryo and a bit of info. I was so excited on the day of the demonstration. We packed up and I waited my turn.,,believe it or not one of my last 2 eggs had started hatching! I did my thing and eagerly awaited the judges decisions. Well...I did not win. A girl who showed how to give a dog a bath came in second and the first place was a girl who talked about different types of worms dogs get...ugh:sick Of course I was crushed.

BUT...I really learned so much about chicken development so I gained a lot from this experience. It would be wonderful to see a class such as 7-8 or high school do what I did...even for an individual science project.

Well...we will keep up with each other and see how things turn out!!!
