Sewer rats!

Rats are incredibly smart. Everytime we put traps out, they dissapear. I mean, you will see them up til the day we put traps out, then, poof, they're gone. For about a week. Then, gradually, they will reappear, and, if we're lucky, we might catch one or two young ones. Removing the food is one big deterrent, but it's a pain b/c if your birds like to pick at the food throughout the day, they can't. The rats, prior to this last effort, were beginning to eat eggs, and that IS disgusting. We are going to try the plaster of paris mixed with powdered sugar or oatmeal next time we see them; we rigged a box to put traps or pop bait in, with a small hole for the rats to go in, (they can chew the hole to make it bigger, if they want) the box is taped shut to keep the chickens out. I think we need something like bacon or tuna to lure them into the box, though. Failing that, we are going to invest in a rat zapper, the local drug store here will order them and sell same price as we can get on line. Sewer rats (?) don't have any experience with those, as we have no sewer; all rats can get really big, and I saw an uncomfortably big one last time. Our barn is not, and probably will never be, pristine, and that's pretty much what you need, I guess, to keep them away permanently.

OH, also, be careful using poison, if you have other critters you don't want to die, or the chickens, too. If they find a dead poisoned rat and pick at it, they're going to suffer the same fate as the rats.

The sewer rats are UGLY! and meaner than heck would have it! My neighbor said that he could see them coming out of the sewer drains and make their way thru the neighborhood at night for food. Sometimes five to 30 rats will come out at a given night depending which route in the sewer lines they take.

We had a bigger Royal Outdoor shed that they loved to breed and crap in and hubby got tired of it and moved the shed on the concrete carport near the house.

Now the chicken coop is getting the rap from the rats....now I have to start feeding chickens early in the day so they can eat the remining food until night time.

We will have to get some traps. All chicks and chickens are in the coop and run, no access to get outside of the run nor coop unless my daughter decided to let them loose LOL! The rat poison are under the board foundation under the shed and we had several hot days in the last few days, we could smell it reek of dead bodies...we didnt lift the wood foundation of shed to find out how many are dead. UGH! Found one skelton and it was roughly ten inches long. Another rat was eight inches long, minus LONG tail!

Now if I can get some snakes, that would be a bonus but figured a garter snake will not do anything to a rat. Hog snake, maybe! (if I can find any and the neighbors wont have a screaming fit LOL)

Waiting for the cooler weather to come before we can replace the flooring. Its the only way we can do it at this point for cost financially. Will double up on the wirings on wood foundation floorings and try it from there. IF they are still getting into it, then we will have to figure out something out of patio concrete blocks.

That's really gross about the smell, LOL , but it IS the smell of accomplishment. At least you are making headway. May I ask what brand/type of poison you are using? You can pm it to me if you want. Thanks

Do you have a cat?? I have a cat that can catch anything! She came here as a stray kitten and decided to stay. She is 2 years old and, although small, will catch rabbits 1/2 her size and actually have to drag them. She also catches mice, moles, birds and anything else she can. She sits on the coop roof and watches the chickens, but she has never stalked them...yet.

Its Jaquar rat poison bait

Heres the product: http://www.farmandfleet.com/catalog/product.aspx?i=298253&h=090205003

Its
well worth the price and the amount of killing it would do but heck I will have to buy more to keep the sewer rats away! One dies, two more will take its place!

We live in the city, have a few feral cats but they wanted nothing to do with the rats. They rather go for the birds and baby rabbits.

My dad caught some snakes and let them go under our shed that got rid of the prob and the snakes don't ever bother my chickens.
