Sex Link Question

I hope I am posting in the right place...if not, I am sure some very kind moderator will tell me where to go......(hmmmm, did that sound right to you?)

In an order of shipped chicks we got one lone buff Wyandotte cockerel. He has grown into a beautiful rooster and as an added blessing he is very docile and sweet and a favorite of my 13 year old son in whose lap he insists on sitting as often as he can.

I recently separated out my lone NHR rooster with a bevy of Silver Laced Wyandotte hens, knowing they would produce Cinnamon Queens-intending to raise those to sell locally as chicks and pullets. I love the idea of being able to (ahem) eliminate the roos as quickly as possible.

Is there a breed I can cross this pretty BW boy with to make sex linked chicks? I don't have any Barred Rock hens, but do have Dominique's and Cuckoo Maran's.

Your Hew Hampshire roo on the SLW hens isnt going to produce Cinnamon Queens like you see on Cackles Website with single combes and White tails, that is a common myth from false information on the internet. Niether NH or SLWs carry Dominant White so you wont get the White tails and Rose Comb is dominant so you will get rose combed birds with the pullets being red with black tails.

For the Buff Wyandotte roo, yes there are many breeds you can use for him, you can use the Dominiques or Cuckoo Marans that you already have to make Black Sexlinks. Or for Golden/Buff colored Sexlinks you can used SLW hens, Delawares, light Brahmas, light Sussex ect....

I have had folks ask about buying laying hens and figured I would raise both red and black sex links on a small scale to sell. Most folks, at least around here, do not want to mess with babies in brooders etc....and since I don't mind raising babies, I thought I'd use my extra roosters to my advantage.

My son is happy to know we have Dominique hens to put with his rooster....and I imagine the rooster will be pretty happy too.

Yes you will still get Sexlinks from the NH roo X SLW hens, the pullets will just be rose combed and black tailed.

The only out and avaiable breed you can use to reliably make the white and red colored sexlink hens are the hatchery Rhode Island White hens. They are the only breed that you can be assured that they carry both dominant white to make the white tails, and mask a silver columbian pattern to make the sexlinks.
White Leghorns wont work becuase they are Dom White, but not masking a silver columbian pattern under the white.

Silver laced and Silver Columbian colored hens wont becuase though the will make the black tailed red sexlinks, they lack the Dom White needed to make the white tails.

Here you will see my White taild Red Sexlinks that I made using a Speckled Sussex roo on RIWhite hens. You can see the difference in color at day old and at a few months old.

Also on that post you will see my sexlinks made using a Buff Orp roo on Barred Rocks hens, This is the same colored Sexlinks you would get from breeding a Buff Wyandotte roo with Dominique hens, they would just have rose combes where mine had single combes.

The buff columbian colored pullet at the bottom is a cross of a Buff orp on a Silver Laced Wyandotte. Thats the same as what you would get if you decided to breed your buff Wyandotte roo with the Silver laced hens. She wasnt an intentional cross though and was the only one that hatched so I dont have any pics of what the roos would look like but they should be solid white for the most part as chicks.

Rareroo, again I thank you for all of the information. I loved the pictures of your birds. That Speckled Sussex rooster is a gorgeous guy! (I am thinking that this is a breed I might need to have!) Those RIW hens are as lovely as new fallen snow. (Maybe some of these, too!) Do they really lay a brown egg? Are they as prolific a layer as their red counterparts?

You are a veritable fount of wisdom when it comes to genetics.....no matter how hard I try to process it all, my eyes start to glaze over, the mouth drops open.....then the drool.....you get the idea.

Edited: Because I forgot to mention that if our Buff Wyandotte roo and the Dominique hens make babies as pretty as the ones in your other post, I will be VERY, VERY happy.
