Good evening,

I have 3 3 week old Brahma chicks - I think it is probably too soon to sex them (first time raising chicks) They are all developing at a very similar rate, what sort of things should I be looking out for to tell if they are pullets or cockerels?
There is one blue partridge, one blue salmon and one Isabella Thanks

Your little chicks are adorable, but it is too young to tell. For a rooster you should be looking for saddle feathers, a big red comb, and spears. A pullet you should be looking for the opposite of everything I named for a rooster.

The combs and wattles of cockerels usually get red sooner than the pullets' combs and wattles. (I usually notice the redness in wattles before I'm sure of it in combs, but some people notice the combs first.) The cockerels usually have larger combs, too.

For the blue partridge: a male should get a solid blue breast at some point, while a female should have a patterned breast.

I'm not sure about the other colors, but if you look for pictures of adults of those varieties, you could look for gender-specific differences. I know Partridge (blue or black) have different breast colors in different genders, while Columbian (light or buff) have the same color pattern in both genders.

As they keep growing, at some point males will get long, skinny saddle feathers while the females will always have feathers with rounded ends right in front of their tails. (When looking for this, look at the actual feather shape, not the markings, because sometimes a hen's rounded feathers will have pointy markings on them just to confuse us!)

Latest pictures - the chicks are now around 9 weeks old
