sexing day old chicks .... fact or fiction

had an old black farmer here at my place the other day ... he picked up a chick an placed its head between his fore and middle finger ..leaving the rest of the body just to dangle in mid air ... apparently if the chick tries to get get out of this position its a male .... and the ones that succumb and just hang there with out a struggle are females ... first time i seen this ... anybody comfirm ???

There is a claim if they draw their legs up they are male and if they dangle they are female. This is based on the males instinct to raise it legs to fight or be defensive.

I have had very limited success with it being correct.

I can guarantee that any of those methods will have 50% accuracy.

They are all old wives tales that happened to come true often enough (at least half the time) that they stuck.

None of them actually are reliable, and a number of them you can hurt the chick in performing.

I had a woman who wanted to buy some keets from me a few years ago at a swap.

She only wanted girls... She asked if I could tell them apart.

I told her I cannot tell an adult boy or girl guinea apart.


She took her wedding ring off and hung it on a chain and dangled the ring over each bird. She decided by the way the ring moved if they were boys or girls....She bought the girls...
